Submit to God, Resist the Devil

James 4:1-17

James 4:1-17 (CEB)

1 What is the source of conflict among you? What is the source of your disputes? Don’t they come from your cravings that are at war in your own lives? 2 You long for something you don’t have, so you commit murder. You are jealous for something you can’t get, so you struggle and fight. You don’t have because you don’t ask. 3 You ask and don’t have because you ask with evil intentions, to waste it on your own cravings.

4 You unfaithful people! Don’t you know that friendship with the world means hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the world's friend becomes God's enemy. 5 Or do you suppose that scripture is meaningless? Doesn’t God long for our faithfulness in the life he has given to us? 6 But he gives us more grace. This is why it says, God stands against the proud, but favors the humble. 7 Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you. 8 Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Cry out in sorrow, mourn, and weep! Let your laughter become mourning and your joy become sadness. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

11 Brothers and sisters, don’t say evil things about each other. Whoever insults or criticizes a brother or sister insults and criticizes the Law. If you find fault with the Law, you are not a doer of the Law but a judge over it. 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, and he is able to save and to destroy. But you who judge your neighbor, who are you?

13 Pay attention, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such-and-such a town. We will stay there a year, buying and selling, and making a profit.” 14 You don’t really know about tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for only a short while before it vanishes. 15 Here’s what you ought to say: “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 But now you boast and brag, and all such boasting is evil. 17 It is a sin when someone knows the right thing to do and doesn’t do it.

1. Ask With A Pure Heart (v1-3)

Psalm 51:10-12 (CEB)

10 Create a clean heart for me, God;

    put a new, faithful spirit deep inside me!

11 Please don’t throw me out of your presence;

 please don’t take your holy spirit away from me.

12 Return the joy of your salvation to me

     and sustain me with a willing spirit.

2. Stay Faithful (V5)

16 But now you boast and brag, and all such boasting is evil. 17 It is a sin when someone knows the right thing to do and doesn’t do it.

— James 4:16-17

22 You must be doers of the word and not only hearers who mislead themselves. — James 1:22

8 You do well when you really fulfill the royal law found in scripture, Love your neighbor as yourself — James 2:8

9 Let’s not get tired of doing good, because in time we’ll have a harvest if we don’t give up. — Galatians 6:9

3. Believe the best of Others (v11-12)

  • Not your responsibility to Judge (V12)

  • We rarely have all the information to Judge

“5 So don’t judge anything before the right time—wait until the Lord comes. He will bring things that are hidden in the dark to light, and he will make people’s motivations public. Then there will be recognition for each person from God.” — 1 Corinthians 4:5 (CEB)

“You can’t understand someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” — Unknown

“Whenever you are about to find fault with someone, ask yourself the following question: What fault of mine most nearly resembles the one I am about to criticize?” – Marcus Aurelius, Meditations.

  • Believing the best about others allows us to participate in Reciprocity

37 “Don’t judge, and you won’t be judged. Don’t condemn, and you won’t be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good portion—packed down, firmly shaken, and overflowing—will fall into your lap. The portion you give will determine the portion you receive in return.” — Luke 6:37-38 (CEB)

4. Thy Will Be Done (v13-15)

15 Here’s what you ought to say: “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” — James 4:15

Closing Prayer

“I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.”
